Nar and Phu Trekking, an adventure that leads you to the pure wilderness beyond the massive Annapurna Himalaya Mountain range. Understanding the nature of the treks that involve much high altitude, above 3, 000 m high. Including crossing high passes of over 5, 000 m to reach from one scenic place to another. Trekking duration of more than two weeks with a difference to others, allows trekkers to enjoy more of the beautiful country. Having enough rest days with short walks for some days is a great way to get acclimatized before heading towards higher terrain. Nar and Phu Trekking, once a forbidden country that was opened for trekkers and adventurers in 2002. Since then gaining much popularity among travelers in search of new and fresh Himalayan destinations. Although a restricted area, trekkers require a special permit to enter Nar and Phu, where trial diverts from the popular Annapurna circuit route.

The uniqueness of Nar and Phu it’s a picturesque and wind-blown dramatic country, and less visited by the mass flow of trekkers. As well as its pristine location where villages remain unspoiled and pristine as they were past hundreds of centuries. Impressive culture of age-old traditional farm life, the old monasteries makes Nar-Phu much interesting to explore as well for fascinating scenery. Nar and Phu trekking begins with an exciting drive from the capital Kathmandu, after enjoying a wonderful tour of world heritage sites. The overland journey leads to Nepal Mid-West around low farm warm areas and towns of Lamjung district. Trek starts from Syange village with a climb towards cooler Himalayan hills, covered in the nice temperate forest of rhododendron and pine trees. As walking progress heading past nice villages, crossing the raging Masrsyangdi Rivers to enter Manang district at Tal Besi and Dharapani villages. Following the river upstream on the main Annapurna circuit trail to a lovely village at Koto. Located on the junction of Nar-Phu and lower Manang valley, close to Chame the administrative and headquarter town of Manang district.

From Koto, leaving the mainstream trail towards the absolute wilderness to reach our main high destination Nar and Phu villages. Walking above Phu Khola / stream a tributary of Masrsyangdi River entering into gorge enclosed within the high rocky cliff walk on a narrow path lined with pine trees within a cool shade of corridor for few days till Kyang is reached. A small settlement with few houses serves as Tea-House, an open area with large grazing pasture for yaks and other cattle. After Kyang into high Nar-Phu country, where tree lines drop for short juniper and Burberry bushes then reach Phu village. Just ahead crossing a bridge into Phu, encountering a magnificent Chorten that colors and adds to the landscape.

At Phu rest for acclimatization and to explore its interesting and famous Tashi Lhakhang Gompa. Where high priest and Lama Karma Sonam Rimpoche reside who came to Nepal in 1959 along with Dalai Lama from Tibet. Enjoying a wonderful time at Phu exploring beautiful areas with Kyauchu waterfalls, a village of about 30 houses for 150 inhabitants. From here on the same trail for some time, then the route diverts west towards Na village and Kang-La pass. Staying in another nice village of Na, which is quite smaller than Phu but an interesting place. Getting to know the local native daily farm life and their fascinating culture of age-old heritage interwoven to Buddhism religion.From Nar village towards Kang-La Pass crossing over in the early morning, overlooking a breathtaking panorama of the snow mountain range. Includes a massive group of Annapurna peaks towards the south, Chulu and Pisang in the west looking north at Damodar Himal.

Extends to Manaslu and Himlung peaks due to the east direction, and the on the long downhill to reach scenic Manang valley. On reaching the main Annapurna circuit trail, the walk gets pleasant with overnights in a large Manang village. The main hub of whole Manang areas after Chame town, surrounded by high towering peaks of Annapurna and Chulu peaks. After Manang village towards high Thorang-La pass enjoying scenic gradual walks, then with final last climb. Then reaching the highest spot of the adventure at a height of above 5,416 m high. The top of Thorang-La festooned with colorful prayer flags offers grand spectacular scenery of Annapurna, Damodar, and Chulu peaks. Includes excellent views of Dhaulagiri and Nilgiri mountains in the west long downhill reaches you within Lower Mustang at Muktinath, a place with a holy Hindu temple. An important sacred pilgrimage site for Hindu followers as well for some Buddhists, the temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu.

Enjoying the grand success on crossing both high passes of the adventure, nice pleasant walk down to Kaligandaki River valley. As the last final walk of the journey ends on reaching large Jomsom, the headquarter town of Mustang district. Jomsom and Kaligandaki River valley located on the historical Trans Himalaya Salt Trade and Caravan route to Tibet that still exists. The area of Lower Mustang populated by indigenous Thakali people follows Buddhism religions with their own impressive culture and custom. The next early morning from Jomsom, a short scenic flight to land at a low warm city in Pokhara. A city of charm, located on a green valley blessed by natural wonders with massive Annapurna Himalaya and beautiful lakes.Certainly a most wonderful place on earth the Pokhara city, a renowned touristic spot where comfort meets the high towering mountains. After Pokhara an overland journey back to Kathmandu, where our wonderful adventure completes. For people with limited time in Nepal to complete the whole trek, can take the options from the village of Pisang after crossing the Karo-la pass, taking a jeep drive back to Besisahar. Then travel in a local bus or on charted vehicles to reach Kathmandu. While in Pokhara, one can enjoy staying longer for some days to enjoy various adventure sports activities like paragliding, Ultra-Light flights, Zip-Flyer or just relax and enjoy a tour around Pokhara at its natural wonders. One can extend the holiday rafting Kaligandaki River, Seti River, or Trisuli River and stay near Chitwan National Park for exciting wildlife. If the flight gets delayed or canceled at Jomsom airport, due to unfavorable weather conditions, we might have to take the option of driving on a local four-wheeler to Pokhara. On this trek to Nar-Phu, especially on the way to Nar-Phedi or Kang-La base camp might stay in a tented camp for a few overnights, where lodges are not available in high seasons, where some lodge can be overbooked, around Nar Phedi and at Kang-La base.


Trip Itinerary

Day 1 : Arrival in Kathmandu via respective airlines and transfer to hotel.

On arrival at Kathmandu-Nepal International Airport via various airlines, our guide and staff receive you for a short transfer to the heart of Kathmandu city. Where your hotel is located, after checking into your rooms and then meet other members of the trek at the hotel lobby for briefing. Regarding the wonderful adventure to Nar and Phu trek. On briefing includes useful information to make your holiday in Nepal more enjoyable. The evening group welcomes dinner in a lovely Nepalese Restaurant with an introduction to the Nepalese culture of various parts of Nepal with folk dance and music. 

Day 2 : At Kathmandu for trek preparation and tour of heritage sites.

The morning after good breakfast, enjoy a tour of Kathmandu places of great interest where our city guide leads you with a short drive and walks to visit famous historical and religious monuments with old palaces. Most of the ancient temples, Stupas, and monasteries including royal courtyards are listed in world heritage sites in the chapter of fascinating wonders. After an enjoyable back to the hotel, for the final meeting and preparations for the most wonderful adventure to Nar and Phu trekking.

Day 3 : Drive to Syange 1,460 m via Besisahar town 760 m - 06 hrs. 

Starting as earliest as possible, for a long interesting drive towards Nepal Far Mid-West to reach around Lamjung district, heading past the large town of Besisar around the low warm country of heavily farm areas and villages. From Besisahar town might exchange the vehicle for rough roads on jeep tracks to reach our overnight stop in a small village at Syange. Located above the Masrsyangdi River with views of cascading water-falls nearby from the lodge.


Day 4 : Trek to Dharapani 1,920 m - 06 hours.

First-day walks begin with a pleasant old walking trail, avoiding the main motorable road, and then steep climb to reach Jagat village and then to Chamje where strong Buddhism culture starts. As walk leads high above the river into a nice forested area to reach a wide valley at Tal Besi village. Stopping here for lunch then continue walk to the end of the valley with the climb to reach a well-defined track and crossing a bridge to reach at Dharapani for overnight in a nice lodge. A lovely moderate size village of Tibetan influence which is at the point where Manaslu and Annapurna circuit route joins. 

Day 5 : Trek to Koto 2,640 m near Chame town - 05 hrs

Our second-day treks lead to a higher trail within a cool shade of pines, oaks, and rhododendron trees to reach Bagarchap and Danque, a village with an apple orchard in the backyard. From here climb to Timang village facing grand views of Mt. Manaslu and Lamjung Himal, a possible place for lunch stop around its many local restaurants. From here on the easy trail following the river and into pine woodland to reach Koto for overnight. Another lovely place close to Chame town headquarters of Manang areas. At Koto where our route diverts from the main Annapurna circuit trail to reach the higher country of Nar and Phu. 


Day 6 : Trek to Meta 3, 560 m past Dharmasala - 07 hours.

A long day walks today, so better start as early as possible by 7 a.m. allows you to reach the overnight stop in good daylight hours before it gets dark. Walking to enter Nar and Phu valleys, the trail is rough on the rocky and muddy surface, but enjoyable as the route passes through beautiful pine and rhododendron woods, encountering small cave shelters perfect resting places for travelers. The trail heads into a narrow canyon, as walk heads under a wide waterfall, from this point the forest becomes much thinner but with wider vistas of beautiful landscapes. The last leg of the walks to Meta takes you to a steep climb, facing grandeur views of giant snowy peaks of the area. Then finally end the day on reaching Meta for overnight stop, located on a large wide-open plain consists of a few simple lodges, which are clean and offer good meals.

Day 7 : Trek to Kyang 3,820 m - 04 hours.

We have made the walk much shorter due to gain in altitude, as most trekkers head straight to Phu village from Meta, which is a long day, and quite dangerous on high altitude terrain. Today, a short walk of few hours heading higher towards Morning walk leads towards far north towards Phu village isolated area of dry, arid landscapes. On walks chances of spotting some wild-life like Blue Sheep, Himalayan Thar, and Musk deer. If lucky the elusive and rare Snow Leopard with other species of mountain goats. The walk continues on dry country then reaches a wide-open valley to reach Kyang for the overnight stop. A place of Yak and cattle grazing area with simple stone houses that serves as Tea-House and lodges or Inn. Afternoon enjoys a rest with a short hike to explore the wild country with views of high snow-capped mountains towards north, west, east, and south.

Day 8 : Trek to Phu village 4,080 m - 04 hours.

After an overnight in a simple lodge at Kyang, the morning walk of few hours to our destination to Phu village. The walk starts following the Phu River upstream for a while and then descending back to the river again. Trekking out of Kyang and Meta, coming across unique and colorful Tibetan Buddhist Chorten. The trail meanders along the ridge with views of the magnificent Nar Phedi Monastery. The route that takes you after few days from staying at Phu. After an hour's walk through scenic canyons and gorges, you’ll reach a monolith that guards the steep trail up to Phu. As walk progress catch first view of the three villages within the area including the old “Dzong” (Tibetan-style fortress) with the remains of two old ruined forts, impressively perched on top of the flatlands before the village. Just before the bridge to cross into Phu, encountering a line of lovely Chorten that blends with the landscapes. As walk enters into Phu village for two overnights on this windswept country.

Day 9 : Rest day at Phu village and explore Phu Valley

It an important and much necessary to have a rest day at Phu for acclimatization, the morning after breakfast, take a hike to explore the village visit Tashi-Khang and Samdu Choling Monastery, and Kyau-Chu waterfalls, Phu Village with near 30 houses for 100 to 150 local natives. Phu itself an interesting village, and the day is well spent interacting with the villagers. As they spin yak and sheep wool, pound mustard seeds into a paste for oil, or with their daily routine and chores. For the energetic person can take the extra challenge, hike up to Himlung Himal base camp takes through a glacial valley. The Himlung Peak at 7,125 m was recently opened for climbing, on the way might come up with herds of blue sheep skillfully clambering up the cliffs. The trip takes about four to five hours both ways. After a rest and refreshments, a tour of the famous Tashi Lha-Khang Gompa to pay respects to Lama Karma Sonam Rimpoche who came to Nepal with the Dalai Lama in 1959. 

Day 10 : Trek to Nar Phedi 3, 545 m - 05 hrs

Spending a day in Phu village with interesting moments, morning walk heads back to the same earlier path for some hours, as route descends to a narrow gorge of Phu Khola / steam. From here a steady gradual climb to reach Yu-Ghat, a small village with Mani and Chorten a Buddhist monument, then reach a flat area where Nar Phedi is located for an overnight stop. The rooms are neat and clean and the nuns are happy to welcome you can join them in the kitchen, as well as observe them preparing dinner on a modest fireplace. At 5 pm usually perform a puja, worship, and pray, which you are welcome to witness. There is a small donation box in the monastery where you can leave a contribution for the maintenance of this beautiful, friendly place.


Day 11 : Trek to Nar Gaon 4,206 m - 05 hrs

The morning starts walking to Phu Khola / stream, for few hours towards a suspension bridge above the stream, as walk leads to a line of wonderfully painted, bamboo-topped Chorten on the way to the old village. Reaching at Nar Gaon for an overnight stop. Nar-Gaon in comparison with Phu almost similar, but smaller due to its remoteness and high altitude dry terrain. With a few new teahouses/lodges built on the outskirts of Nar, staying in a comfortable lodge with a long list of food menus to choose from. The village is more social and lively than Phu, rest of the day enjoy walks and observe the village life teeming with local and their back-strap looms weaving wool fabric for rugs and blankets. 

Day 12 : Trek to Kang La Base Camp 4,530 m - 04 hrs.

From Nar village, heading towards complete wilderness away from human settlement, except for some Yak herders temporary shelters. Morning walk a few hours walks with short ups and downs in some rocky and arid trails, passing grazing field to head further west following Temdenzon Khola (stream). Facing excellent views of Chulu, Annapurna peaks then reaching at Kang la pass base or Phedi in Nepali for an overnight stop. A place with few Tea-Houses and a simple lodge for accommodation might camp overnight, depending upon the season of time. Kang La base is located just at the bottom of the high pass. Herewith time for a short walk and hike and enjoy the grand views of snow peaks that surround these remote corners of upper Manang.


Day 13 : Cross Kang-la Pass 5, 306 m, trek to Ngawal 3,650 m - 08 hrs.

Starting before dawn, having good early breakfast to traverse over Kang-la pass to reach on the other side of Manang valley. Begins with a steep climb on a narrow path uphill and steep slope to tackle for few hours. But rewards you with stunning views of Annapurna Mountain range with Pisang Peak and Chulu group of peaks, includes a view of Damodar Himal towards the north with Himlung Himal in the east direction. From the top at Kang-La 5, 306 m / 17, 408 feet high enjoying spectacular views, and then a long downhill to Ngawal village for an overnight stop. Ngawal, situated on the upper Pisang village of Annapurna Circuit route, very different from the ancient villages of Nar and Phu. The lodges are big, the menus much more with varieties as well facilities of Wifi and phone signals in most lodges around.



Day 14 : Trek to Manang village 3,540 m - 05 hrs.

From here on nice and pleasant walk on a well-defined wide trail till Thorang Phedi or base. Walk down to Pisang village or head towards Hombre and Braga eventually leads to main big Manang village. On route to Manang village with a short stop at Braga village, a tour of the oldest monastery within Manang area an interesting Buddhist building the interior with ancient scrolls and a large statue of Lord Buddha and famous Gurus. Located on top of Braga village and the main trail to Manang offers a grand panorama of Annapurna Himalaya with Chulu’s as far towards Manaslu range. From here short walk up to enter the large Manang village, where houses are built with traditional Tibetan style, Manang people are known for their rich culture and traditions. The village in the center of a large scenic valley enclosed within high peaks of Chulu, Annapurna, and Gangapurna mountains. Check into a nice lodge, with a comprehensive food menu to enjoy along with large rooms attached or common bath and restrooms.

Day 15 : Trek to Yak Kharka 4,210 m - 04 hrs.

After a pleasant and enjoyable time in Manang village, walk leads towards North-West to reach Thorang-La, as trek follows a gradual trail past few smaller settlement to reach at Yak Kharka for lunch and overnight stop. Facing grand views of Chulu West Peak with Gangapurna in the south. A lovely settlement with several good lodges for overnight stops with great meals to enjoy along with the spectacular scenery.


Day 16 : Trek to Thorang- La High Camp or Phedi 4, 450 m - 04 hrs.

From Yak Kharka, which means a shelter of Yak herders where walk leads on a nice level path to reach another small place at Ledar with few good lodges. After a short rest continue to walk down to a stream, and then climb high above Jarjung stream, as the trail follows to the base or Phedi of Thorang-La Pass. A small settlement with 3-4 lodges, having short rest and then climb to a steep gravel path for an hour to Upper or High Camp for lunch and overnight stay in a simple lodge with a good food menu to enjoy.  


Day 17 : Cross Thorang La 5,416 m and trek to Muktinath 3,800 m-06 hrs.

An early morning start after breakfast starts with a gradual small path as the walk progresses on winding steep up to reach a small open area with glacial ponds. From here another hour of climb reaches you on top of the highest point of the adventure at Thorang-La Pass which is above 5, 416 m high. The top is marked with a signboard with the name and heights of the pass, decorated with hundreds of prayer flags offering. The pass offers a super panorama of high peaks that surrounds the pass, facing views of Mt. Dhaulagiri with some peaks of Mustang areas. Enjoying the grand scenery, a long descend to reach another side of the pass into Mustang region, from the bottom a place with few small tea-shops and then easy walk to Muktinath for an overnight stop. Muktinath an important temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu one of the three main gods in the Hindu religion. Where thousands of pilgrims and devotees pay homage all year round from across Nepal and India. A holy site for both Hindus and Buddhists, the name means ‘place for Nirvana or Liberation.


Day 18 : Trek to Jomsom 2,715 m - 04 hrs

Today our last day walk from Muktinath to Jomsom, morning with gradual downhill with a big drop of 1,200 m towards Kaligandaki River windy valley, walk-on wide river valley to Jomsom. The headquarter town of the Mustang area with a small airstrip above Kaligandaki River. A large town with nice hotels, lodge for travelers, after checking into a nice room with refreshing lunch, enjoy the afternoon visiting markets with nice houses, paved streets with many well-kept lodges and hotels. Jomsom is located on the old Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Route of Nepal to Tibet, which extends beyond Upper Mustang. The whole region of Lower Mustang inhabited by Thakali people the main tribe of Kaligandaki valley follows the Buddhism religion with an interesting culture. At Jomsom celebrate with local apple products cider, brandy, and juice, as Jomsom and Marpha area around Kaligandaki famous for delicious apple and the product from the apples. 

Day 19 : Fly to Pokhara 860 m and transfer to hotel by the Phewa Lakeside.

Morning as per flight time for Pokhara, having good breakfast then walk to Jomsom airport terminal, and then board on a smaller aircraft for a scenic short flight of 20 minutes to beautiful Pokhara. During air enjoy grand views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna peaks, then on landing at Pokhara airport, short drive to your hotel near the famous scenic Phewa Lake. Pokhara, renowned touristic destinations and in all Himalaya, a picturesque city in the shade of Annapurna Himalaya with close views of magnificent towering Machhapuchare Himal 'Fish Tail' (due to its twin summit).The rest of the day free for individual activities, or enjoy boating on the lake and hike to Peace Stupa located on a hilltop opposite side of the lake.

Day 20 : Drive to Kathmandu -06 hours (via air 30 minutes scenic flight)

After breakfast, depart from Pokhara for an exciting and interesting drive to Kathmandu, as the journey heads on the main highway past many farm villages and towns. The drive follows the Trisuli River for some hour and then climbs to reach the suburb of Kathmandu valley. Finally, the ride heads down to enter the hustle, bustle city life of Kathmandu, and then transfer to your respective hotel. The rest of the afternoon free for individual activities and shopping souvenirs or enjoy rest with grand memories of the adventure on the high mountains of Annapurna Himalaya.(Flying options half-hour on-air to Kathmandu with a sweeping panorama of mountains)

Day 21 : Depart Nepal for international departure homeward bound.

Your last day in Nepal, enjoying a memorable adventure of a lifetime experience on Nar and Phu Trekking, and then as time for your international flight. Our staff transfers you to the airport for homeward bound.
